Tourism flourishes despite Disneyland

SONGJIANG tourism has enjoyed a bumper summer season, defying skeptics who said the district’s visitor attractions would be hurt by the opening of the new Shanghai Disneyland.
Growth in tourism in the last three months was due, in part, to the grand Shenshan Hill Summer Carnival from June 25-August 31. It involved more than 10 scenic sights and hotels that belong to Sheshan National Resort Committee and was supported by the district’s tourism bureau.
With new facilities, more live shows staged and improved services, the Sheshan Hill area sparkled in the summer tourism season.
Shanghai Maya Water Park’s second phase opened this year, expanding its area to 200,000 square meters, as big as 476 standard basketball courts. The park introduced new water-thrill attractions imported from Canada and the United States.
The park added more than 100 water games for families with small children, and every day 50 live performances were staged, involving 100 artists from home and abroad.
The water park’s director admitted that he was not feeling particularly optimistic going into this summer, what with Disneyland opening in June.
However, from June 18 to August 15, Maya Water Park logged 630,000 visits, surpassing the total number from June to the middle September last year.
Shanghai Happy Valley, Maya’s twin attraction under the same investment group, launched a multimedia night water show this summer, combining water jets, lasers, music, lights, 3D technology and fireworks in an 18-minute extravaganza for the senses.
The performance was given on the park’s central lake, which is about the size of 71 basketball courts, and drew 1,500 visitors each night.
During the carnival, Happy Valley and Maya Water Park each reduced admission to their night safaris. They received a combined 1.25 million visitors this summer, an increase of 10 percent from last year. Revenue rose by 13 percent.
Nearby hotels pulled out all the stops to attract more guests.
The five-star Sofitel Shanghai Sheshan Oriental at the foot of Sheshan Hill featured a children’s opera show. The Qube Hotel Xinqiao opened one-stop shuttle bus between the hotel and the Shanghai Disneyland, and the four-star Xinhui Hotel offered family suites for the summer holiday.
The opening of Disneyland across the river from southern Songjiang had a positive spill-over effect for the district.
Xiangwei Rose Garden and Xuelanghu Ecological Park reported full complements of visitors every weekend. Many were tourists from the Yangtze River Delta Region, who visited Disneyland and then explored nearby attractions.
