Tourism’s brisk returns during week of festival
Songjiang tourism, catering and accommodation sectors enjoyed a vintage holiday welcoming the Year of the Horse during Spring Festival, according to the local statistics bureau.
Thirty-five shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants and boutiques reported sales rose 7.9 percent from the year-earlier holiday period to 435 million yuan (US$70.96 million).
The Kaiyuan Dizhonghai Plaza reported sales rose by a third to 38 million yuan, and the Ludu Shopping Mall said volumes jumped by 56 percent to 24 million yuan.
Catering industry
The catering industry opened its doors to throngs of families who held New Year’s Eve dinners away from home. Songjiang’s hotels catered 528 tables of reunion dinners, a 4.5 percent. Each table spent an average 2,864 yuan. That was a 7.4 percent drop, probably reflecting the central government’s edict of restraint in public displays of wealth.
The district’s 10 scenic spots, including Zuibai Pond, Fangta Park and the Happy Valley amusement park, welcomed 371,200 tourists during the holiday, with revenue rising 49 percent to 14.3 million yuan.
Dragon dances and South American alpacas in the Happy Valley park attracted 47,200 visitors, who spent 8.5 million yuan.
The Lantern Festival in Fangta Park drew 45,000 tourists, triple the number last year, while the Sheshan Hill National Resort received 96,000 day-trippers, an increase of 68 percent. The Shanghai Film Park, with its popular sets of 1930s Shanghai, attracted 10,400 visitors.
Ten hotels in the statistics bureau’s sampling said they accommodated 9,500 guests, with average occupancy reaching 43 percent.
Increasing car traffic
More than 390,000 cars were logged through the Songjiang Fengjing toll station on the G60 (Shanghai-Kunming) Highway, though tolls were waived during the holiday.
Firecrackers to celebrate the Year of the Horse dramatically dropped to 67 tons from 140.5 tons last year, reflecting increasing public concern about the air pollution they generate.
The Songjiang Fire Department said it deployed 1,283 firefighters and handled 84 emergencies during the holidays. No deaths were reported.
