Training new hands to preserve history

CHINA’S first undergraduate-level school for the preservation and restoration of cultural relics has been established at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts based in Songjiang.
China currently has about 30 million cultural relics collected in museums and art institutions, and more than half of them are in need of restoration.
The 110,000 people now engaged in the industry have few true experts among them. More are needed. In addition to relics work, the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts now offers majors in the protection and restoration of oil paintings, porcelain items and ancient papers.
More than 150 graduates have been involved in restoration projects, including one at Ili Museum in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and one on an ancient ship in Guangdong Province that was put under the protection of the Marine Silk Road Museum after its salvage in 2007.
