Tsingtao reuses fermentation gas
CHINA Tsingtao Beer’s Songjiang factory is recycling 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the fermentation process, using it to improve the brew’s flavor, prevent oxidation and extend product shelf life.
Since the beginning of this year, the factory has been recycling the carbon dioxide every 17 hours instead of every 21 hours. It also invested in new machines to monitor the recycling in real time.
“We spent about 500,000 yuan (US$81,301) a year in the past to buy CO2,” said factory Director Zhu Yongxiang. “Now we recycle the gas ourselves, which not only saves money for the company but also is kinder to the environment.”
The factory is also recycling gas heat, which increased the rate of boiler combustion by 7 percent and lowers coal consumption by 6.4 percent.
