Vegetables grow better with nutrients in water
VEGETABLES growing on 87 hectares in Songjiang are thriving because plant nutrients are added to the water they “drink.”
The Yonghe Agricultural Center in Maogang Town has become the fourth such center in the district to use the advanced irrigation system.
Tests conducted by Songjiang Great Nature Agricultural Technology in the past two years have shown that additives in irrigation water help plants develop stronger root systems and grow faster than plants irrigated with plain water.
When harvested and stored, plants fed the supercharged water last up to four days longer. Harvests are increased by up to 16 percent.
The new system was adopted three years ago by the local agricultural committee. Each additive machine can treat 50 tons of water an hour, supplying 20 hectares of crops.
The specially treated water is slightly alkaline, a perfect pH reading for most vegetables.
The new technology has grabbed the interest of farmers and is likely to be expanded to other vegetable production sites, according to agricultural officials.
