You don’t have to go out to enjoy scrumptious ice cream

A big part of summer fun is a big bowl of ice cream on a scorching hot day. Though Shanghai’s summer is coming to a close, early autumn doesn’t mean an end to the heat. So it’s not too late to be well prepared. Why not roll up your sleeves and try DIY ice cream at home?

In a blender, put cubes of freshly cut papaya, some milk and fructose or honey. You might also add several pineapple slices for a mellower, softer taste. Blend until mixture is thick. Strain the mixture to remove papaya dregs and retain the liquid. Pour the mixture into molds or ice cream lattices and put into a freezer until hard. A tip: soak the lattices in cold water for several minutes to make extricating the popsicles easier.

Many a hot afternoon is relieved by a cup of fragrant green tea, but have you ever tried this frozen treat variation?

Blend green tea powder, which is available in supermarkets, fructose and hot water. The water temperature should be no more than 60 degrees Celsius. Don’t add too much powder or the taste will become too bitter.

Alternatively, if you have the time, prepare a cup of green tea and let it cool.

Mix the green tea mixture and yogurt together. Pour into the ice lattices and freeze. The yogurt eases the bitterness of the tea and adds a healthy ingredient to the ice cream.

Spirits might be strong at room temperature, but when frozen, their flavor is radically altered.

Blend iced coffee and some whisky together. Add some ice cream powder and stir until the mixture starts to thicken. Freeze. If you find whisky too harsh, you might substitute a cream liqueur, which mellows the flavor.

To serve, decorate a glass dish with chocolate drops or fresh fruits. Add the ice cream, and end with a flourish of cream and a Pocky on top.

Another variation of this recipe is made with white wine and soda, in equal proportions. Blend together, pour into ice cube trays and freeze. To serve, crumble the frozen wine ice into a glass dish and top with cut fresh cherries and hawthorn cubes.
