Shanghai government designated Yangpu District a "Knowledge Creative District" in 2003, which gave Yangpu a different direction for development and opened up a new Yangpu.
Yangpu District has experienced a major transformation from a traditionally industrial district to a "Knowledge Creative District."
And over years, people in Yangpu have recorded the changes in their hometown with their cameras. The photographs are a vivid memorial of the district's transformation.
Six years ago, the Yangpu District government started to work with the Shanghai Photographers' Association to stage an annual photographic competition "Facing Yangpu." During the six years, more than 600 excellent photographs of Yangpu have been selected for the competition. The photographers come from all walks of life.
Recently the Yangpu District government selected the best 200 photographs and published a book "The Hometown I Love - Impressions of Yangpu."
Those photos show the changes in almost every aspect of the area, including its transformations from an industrial to a knowledge creative area. The pictures trace the long history of the university and technology and daily life in Yangpu.
Yangpu District is in the northeast of Shanghai, at the northwestern Bund of the Huangpu River. In the west lies Hongkou District and to the north Baoshan District.
Yangpu covers 60.61 square kilometers. The area used to be known as Yangshupu after the Yangshupu Harbor. In 1950 it was officially renamed Yangpu.
Yangpu District is well-known for its traditional industries. It's the birthplace of Shanghai's modern industrial activity. The first paper factory, tap-water factory and textile machine factory were all established in Yangpu. In 1927, there were 57 foreign investment industries and 301 Chinese domestic industries there. In 1949, the Yangpu District was home to thousands of companies and more than 1,000 factories. The gross value of its industrial output then reached 7.2 billion yuan (US$1 billion), making up 20 percent of the total value of Shanghai, and 5 percent of China.
Yangpu also has several sources of higher education and technology institutes with more than 150,000 students. Early in the beginning of the 20th Century, Catholic colleges were established in Yangpu. Chinese education grew rapidly through the 1930s to 1940s.
There are now 14 colleges in Yangpu, making up more than a third of the total number of colleges in Shanghai. Yangpu is regarded as the center of Shanghai's higher education.
Here are universities with long histories and famous names like Fudan and Tongji.
"The universities in Yangpu are an advantage and a very important support for the new 'knowledge creative Yangpu,'" says Zong Ming, Yangpu District governor.
"We have staged photographic exhibitions and published a book over six years," says Wang Xuhui from the Yangpu Publicity Department. "Those photos are a very precious record for all who live in Yangpu. People will be touched by the love of millions for this area. Yangpu is really a great hometown for harmony and happiness."
