Charting the way forward
Yangpu District is transforming itself into a smart economy based on high technology and innovation.
The district’s landmarks range from universities more than 100 years old to busy commercial areas like Wujiaochang.
Yet, a new generation of landmarks are taking Yangpu into the future, including Tongji Knowledge-based Economy Circle; Dalian Road, where headquarters and R&D centers congregate; and New Jiangwan City and the Knowledge & Innovation Community — two international neighborhoods focused on environmental sustainability.
Yangpu features different aspects of productivity, from traditional business to next-generation high technology. High-tech parks are leading the district’s economic evolution. The idea is for businesses, universities and communities to work together and efficiently utilize resources.
As the economy evolves, so does its culture. Home to 10 higher education institutions — about a third of Shanghai’s total — the universities here are key pillars in the district’s efforts to modernize.
The district government has also introduced policies to help entrepreneurs start up their own businesses and attract highly skilled individuals to live and work in Yangpu.
Today’s Yangpu has come a long way from the 1880s, when the district was leading China’s industrialization drive. The district built the country’s first modern waterworks in 1883 and the first mechanical cotton textile factory in 1890.
This history of innovation continues today with modern ideas and strong municipal management.
Yangpu can draw upon its historic strengths along with its academic and entrepreneurial excellence.
