Fudan students take on the global issues
FUDAN University students - future journalists and communicators - have been honored for their research into major world issues.
Seven student teams made presentations last Tuesday based on their four months of research into issues like climate change, the economy, AIDS, terrorism and food security.
Four teams received awards from a jury panel and two students will be selected for a three-month internship at a UNAIDS overseas office.
They are part of the "Globalization and Localization" program of the Second Serge Dumont-Fudan Strategic Communications Research Fellowship Award.
It was held in connection with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the School of Journalism at Fudan University.
The three-year program encourages Chinese students to become more involved in world issues.
Serge Dumont is an international businessman and senior vice president of Omnicom Group Inc, which provides marketing and advertising services. He has lived and worked in China and Asia for 20 years. He founded the Serge Dumont Fund that sponsors student research.
"Events of recent years have demonstrated that we live in an inter-dependent and interconnected world," Dumont tells students.
"Health issues like AIDS, SARS, H1N1, climate change, the economy, terrorism, food security, religious extremism, people's unprecedented ability to communicate and travel remind us every day that we live on one planet - globalization is affecting lives like never before in history," says Dumont.
"I am impressed once again by the way in which the students from Fudan University have analyzed the complex communications challenges related to globalization," he adds.
As an international metropolis, Shanghai is confronted with the challenges and opportunities presented by globalization, he observed.
Students in the program included undergraduates, master's degree and doctoral graduates.
Their topics include the relationship between cross-cultural employees and the human resource localization in multinational enterprises in China; foreign-invested enterprises' corporate social responsibility and localization issues in China; and ways for foreign companies to development in external relations management.
"Through research and practical experience, I get a better understanding of the relationship between the globalization and localization, especially in an economic downturn," says Tang Xiyan, a contestant.
