International music festival returns to Shanghai
MUSIC lovers in Shanghai are in for a treat later this month, as an annual wind music festival returns to Yangpu District.
Audiences can enjoy more than 20 concerts from wind bands from both home and abroad during The Shanghai Spring International Wind Music Festival, scheduled to run from April 20 to May 6.
Among the festival’s headliners is the well-known Military Band of China People’s Liberation Army. Bands from Germany, Austria and Malaysia are also expected to bring new experiences to audiences.
Apart from professionals, amateur bands are expected to shine during the festival. More than 90 bands formed by high school and elementary school students, teachers, police officers and farmers are slatted to show their talents.
Performances will be held at locations around the city, including the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, local schools, neighborhoods and a floating venue on the Huangpu River. Shows will also be available on new media platforms for online viewers.
Organizers say that since 2008 the festival has played a significant role in nurturing young players and cultivating public interest in classical music.
“As a comprehensive music festival, the wind music festival aims to popularize wind instruments, support talented wind musicians and provide a stage for wind music from both China and foreign countries,” said Jiang Siwen, vice chairman of the China Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. “It will encourage communication among musicians internationally and promote the development of wind music.”
A main theme of this year’s festival will be the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. At one themed show, the military band will perform musical works created during and after the war. The band will also perform for students at local universities.
“Wind music is friendly, energetic and appealing,” said Yu Hai, director of the wind music festival committee. “This year we will highlight wind music communication and promotion platforms.”
