Making sports a bigger part of life

LIVING in a community where more than 30 percent of residents are seniors may not be as boring or old-fashioned as you think.

To most people's surprise, it can be a community full of passion for sports and exercise.

At Yinhang Community in Yangpu District, exercise space has reached 4,192 square meters. Each building is allocated with badminton rackets and table tennis rackets.

A bodybuilding team has existed ever since the community was established in 1992. It also has a qigong (life force skill) club, a waist drum team and a fitness exercise team with a total of 110 members.

"Activity each week, lecture each month, contest each quarter" is the goal of the community.

"We do morning exercises every day, from tai chi to kungfu to ball aerobics," said Huang Yunlan, the community's sports tutor.

"As a tutor, my job is to inspire more residents to exercise and join contests held by ourselves. The retired people find it's a good way to keep track of social trends and make new friends, while the young find it as good as exercising at a gym."

In fact, there are more than 2,000 registered sports tutors in the district. They serve as volunteers to take an active part in encouraging people to get active and stay active.

The population of Yangpu has reached 1.3 million. The local government is now making efforts to boost local sports services for the public.

Zhang Xiangtai, vice director of the district's sports bureau, said it is necessary to advocate fitness in communities so more people will enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

"It's a great feeling when walking through a community and people are engaged in many different types of sports," Zhang said. "It's a beautiful scene when sports becomes a part of our lives."

To further support the "sports-for-all" goal, the district has established a constitution monitoring center, an exercise and training center and a social sports tutor center.

The constitution monitoring center collects information before and after residents exercise. It not only collects data but also serves to guide residents on how to stay fit.

The website yptycd.shyp.net.cn provides a list of sports venues open to the public in Yangpu.

The digital map covers almost every sports venue in the district from public stadiums, community playgrounds, fitness spots and school playgrounds to tennis and basketball courts, snooker tables, football fields and swimming pools.

At the same time, it provides scientific evidence for the local government to make good use of land and selecting locations for new sports facilities.

Currently, the district's 95 elementary and middle schools have all opened to the public. The 12 universities and colleges in Yangpu will also open to the public gradually. It is estimated that each year at least 1 million people benefit from these playgrounds and courts.

At Huangxing Sports Park there are two courts for gate ball and six for basketball. A driving range for golf and an archery field will open to the public within the year.

The park will also soon feature outdoor sports such as rock climbing and beach volleyball.

From 2008 to 2010, the district government spent 16.37 million yuan (US$2.52 million) on its "sports-for-all" program.
