When it comes to sports, Yangpu has few peers

WITH sports rooted in its tradition, Yangpu District now has Shanghai University of Sport and its affiliated primary school, middle school and high school as well as the Chinese Table Tennis College. It’s known for swimming, football and track and field. It’s also the only national demonstration district of nationwide fitness program in Shanghai.

In recent years, Yangpu’s sports school, swimming school and handball training base have been titled as high-level national sports training bases by the General Administration of Sport. The Kia World Extreme Games held in Yangpu has been honored as one of the top international sport events of Shanghai.

Yangpu has established the 30-minute sports life circle in the district, which manages to guarantee that every resident in the district can find a sport venue within 30 minutes’ walk.

So far, Yangpu has 532 community fitness venues, 20 public sport venues, 53 fitness trails and 20 gyms. Shanghai SMP Skate Park is the biggest professional extreme game venue in the world.

Meanwhile, the district has sent trained sports tutors as family fitness coaches into communities to encourage residents to participate in various sports exercises such as body-building exercise, badminton and yoga.

Yangpu also holds the Grand Citizen’s Sports League as well as small special sports games throughout every year to involve more citizens into sports events. Besides the current 27 sports bases in communities, school campuses and army camps, more bases have been established in office buildings this year.

Football league

The final matches of the first Tongyu Cup School Class Football League of Shanghai School Football League Yangpu Branch were held at No.1 High School Affiliated to Tongji University on December 12.

Shanghai School Football League Yangpu Branch has contributed a lot in attracting children’s interests in football and training young football talents in recent years.

The league was divided into two sections. The first phase matches were among classes of each of the 19 schools in the league, and the champion winning class then participated in the final games on behalf of its school.

It involved four age groups and 19 schools. The Class 3 of the fourth grade of Wujiaochang Primary School, the Class 5 of the fifth grade of the Primary School Affiliated to Fudan University, the Class 4 of the second grade of Anshan Middle School and the Class 1 of the second grade of the No.1 High School Affiliated to Tongji University won the championships of their age groups.

Juvenile football invitation

Yangpu has held the Shanghai International Juvenile Football Invitational Tournament from 2011 to 2014 to improve communication with foreign cities and attract more teenagers into football games.

The game was organized by the Shanghai Football Association, Foreign Affairs Office of Yangpu government, Yangpu Sports Bureau and Yangpu Education Bureau.

Under the invitation of the Royal Federation of Football of Spain, the juvenile football delegation of Yangpu visited Madrid to participate in the international tournament last year. The seven-day training and matches not only improved the skills and understanding of football of those young players, but also promoted their communication with their foreign counterparts.

This year, Yangpu will hold the International Juvenile Football Invitational Tournament again and will invite 16 juvenile football teams from countries like Spain, Japan and Korea as well as those from the Yangtze Delta region, international schools in Shanghai and local juvenile teams.

The game will take place July 6-12 at Shanghai Yangpu Youth Amateur Sports School Football Campus on Zhoujiazui Road. It will be a seven-a-side game, and all the athletes must be born after January 1, 2004.

Extreme games

Kia World Extreme Games (KWEG) is now definitely the most popular sports event held in Yangpu. Initiated in 2007, the event is also one of the most prestigious grand sports events worldwide. During the May 1 holidays last year, KWEG 2014 attracted 71,600 audience at Jiangwan Stadium.
