Yangpu opens library of old Shanghai memories
A NOSTALGIA library highlighting old Shanghai, with lots of photos, has opened in Yangpu District.
The free library, within the main Yangpu Library, offers an online database, audio and video clips, and of course books, documents and pictures.
Established by the Shanghai Library and Yangpu Library, it covers around 100 years of economic development, urban planning, architecture and culture from the First Opium War to 1949.
A highlight is Shanghai Nianhua or Shanghai Memories, a database providing pictures of Shanghai in the 1930s -- daily life, banking, laundries, advertisements and celebrities.
"Unlike traditional libraries that provide electronic catalogues for only written documents, the new specialized library offers visual and audio clips as well," says Wang Wanqing, curator of the library.
Readers can look up their interests on the Internet, then watch the relevant clips in the audio-visual room of the library, Wang said.
A reading center allows readers to share ideas and experiences. Professional staff are on duty. Lectures and exhibitions will be organized.
Specialized libraries are increasingly popular. A similar "window on China" international library recently opened in Changning District.
Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 9am-5pm
Address: 3/F, Yangpu Library, Bldg 1, 1490 Pingliang Rd
