Yangpu race sights worth stopping to admire

The 2015 Yangpu Xinjiangwan Town 8K Race will be held on Sunday. The race is expected to draw about 3,500 runners in two events — the 8-kilometer main race and a 2-kilometer “happiness run,” according to organizers.

Now in its second year, the community running activity is aimed at white-collar workers and expatriates in and around Shanghai. A sports carnival and photography contest will also add to the fun on race day.

Both competitions kick off at 8:30am on Sunday, on Zhenghe Road.

Last year’s event attracted 2,400 runners.

This year’s 8K race passes by a number of Yangpu District landmarks, including the Jiangwan campus of Fudan University, the Xinjiangwan Town Cultural Center and the SMP Skate Park.

Before the big event, come along with Shanghai for an overview of the main route’s attractions.

Jiangwan Sports Center

Originally known as Jiangwan Stadium, this is the oldest stadium in the city.

Built back in the 1930s by the Kuomintang government, the facility was once regarded as one of the finest sports arenas in Asia, thanks to its 20-meter tall main grandstand constructed white marble and flanked by a pair of ritual vessels built on either side.

Over the past 70 years, the stadium has undergone several restorations and expansions. Now, the modern facility can hold 40,000 spectators. It also features a swimming stadium and venues for extreme sports.

The last grand event held in the stadium was the closing ceremony of the 2007 Special Olympic Games.

SMP Skate Park

This is the very first skate park built in Shanghai, as well as one of the largest such parks in the world. The park features three areas for skaters of various skill levels — from novices to expert shredders.

The park’s designer, Simon Oxenham from Australia, has been skating for over three decades. He and his team designed more than 300 parks all over the world before the project in Shanghai.

As the surrounding Xinjiangwan Town area aims to become more international and cosmopolitan corner of Shanghai, the park is expected to become one of its main amenities.

Experimental School of Shanghai Conservatory of Music

As a relatively young school with just under 20 years of history, the Experimental School of Shanghai Conservatory of Music has already established a strong reputation for excellence. It was thanks to its early successes that a new campus in Xinjiangwan Town was built in 2009.

In the school’s elementary level, each grade has a Chinese folk music band. Meanwhile, the middle-school level has four of its own wind-instrument bands.

These bands regularly perform concerts in the district and have received positive feedback from both students and parents.

Xinjiangwan Town Culture Center

In the southwest corner of New Jiangwan Town Park is a culture center that serves as a convention venue, a gallery, a lecture hall and a cinema. The facility was built using ecologically friend methods and materials intended to complement its verdant surroundings.

Xinjiangwan Town

Based on its existing strength as an educational and sports center, Xinjiangwan is now making brand new efforts to redefine its image in the modern era. It has aimed to develop its land with a balance among environment, economy and life. It had reserved beforehand enough space for the layout of a harmonious building structure.

The design of architecture conforms to the national green building standard with application of multiple new types of environmentally friendly building materials.

It is estimated that 20 percent of the town is reserved for public greenery. Counting the gardens and parks inside the communities, half of Xinjiangwan Town is covered with trees and grass.

Xinjiangwan has a 2.7-kilometer greenbelt in its east that helps improve the quality of air in the neighborhood and brings the natural tranquility of the environment to the people living and working nearby.

The town is also home to a 70-year-old natural wetland and has a four-season evergreen landscape. There are more than 50 kinds of water plants in rivers and lakes within the area.
