Artist explores life in the age of modern technology
CHINESE media artist Xu Wenkai is showcasing his first solo exhibition “alias: aaajiao” in the city’s Leo Xu Projects gallery. Taking “aaajiao” as a virtual persona, Xu works actively online as a media artist, blogger, activist and programer. His exhibition comprises a body of new and commissioned works, which measure the new dimension of high technology and media-based works, and address the issues derived from contemporary living with Internet and digital technology.
The centerpiece of the show “Karesansui” (2015) is a site-specific sculpture that borrows its title from the Japanese word for a rock garden. Created by his algorithm and made of sponges that look like rocks, Xu’s “Karesansui” presents an unsettling dystopian scene of mutant limbs that grow out of the gallery’s floors, walls, and stairway, sprawling all over and competing with each other. “Anomaly” (2015) is a series of sculptures that look like meteors. It’s a celebration of the classic beauty of the dark imagination of sci-fi cinema.
As the title suggests, “alias: aaajiao” highlights an intense sci-fi aspect to Xu’s recent projects and the evolving notion of time and space, which has been the subject of films and many other pop culture products over the years.
