Original Chinese musicals at Culture Square
A series of original Chinese musicals will be staged at Shanghai Culture Square from March 14-28 as the Original Chinese Musical Season.
Aiming to provide a platform for original Chinese musicals with potential, Shanghai Culture Square has presented eight original musicals since it initiated the Original Chinese Musical Season in 2012.
Four new creations — “Fleeting Clouds, the Splendid Library,” “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils,” “See The Peach Bloom Turning Red Again” and “No Tears for Ten Years” — were selected to be staged this year from 10 candidates.
“We have witnessed more original creations born within the past four years, which is definitely good news for the market,” says Fei Yuanhong, artistic director of the venue, “but it is still quite demanding to select the qualified ones for our theater.”
‘See The Peach Bloom Turning Red Again’
This musical will be staged March 14, drawing the curtain on Shanghai Culture Square’s annual Original Chinese Musical Season.
It was created and premiered by the Suzhou Municipal Singing and Dancing Theater, and has been adapted several times before landing in Shanghai, according to the artistic director Xie Shouxian.
The story centers on a family of distinguished traditional Chinese painters, where conflicts are hidden by a fragile balance. The arrival of a young house maid at the family breaks the balance and triggers the drama.
Based on the traditional culture of the ancient city of Suzhou, philosophical collisions between the old and young generations within the city are staged in the musical.
‘Fleeting Clouds, the Splendid Library’
This musical made its debut at the Edinburgh International Art Festival in August last year. It will play March 20-21.
The story occurs in a 100-year-old library building south of Yangtze River, where two young people meet each other and fall in love for the historic book, unfolding a sentimental love story and a legend to protect books in the war.
With rich art culture and historic value it confers, the musical has been praised as the Chinese version of “War and Peace.”
Date: March 20-21, 7:15pm
‘No Tears for Ten Years’
This original musical shares the same name as a once-popular Chinese song. It will be staged March 24.
Despite poverty and low status, a group of young people are always working hard and pursuing their dreams in such a glamorous metropolis as Beijing. They make an effort to display the thought and spirits of their generation in this musical.
The play is another masterpiece by the Taiyuan Acrobatics Group, with joint effort from well-known musical producers and directors from the United States, South Korea and Canada as consultants.
‘The Wonderful Adventures of Nils’
Recomposed from world classical literature by Swedish writer Selma Lagerlof, this musical will be staged March 27 as the first original musical co-produced by China and Britain.
The adventure tells of a young lad, Nils Holgersson, whose chief delight is to eat and sleep and ride his wild goose to travel in the sky with other wild geese. During the journey, his intelligence and soul significantly grow up.
