A romance of Empress Sissi
THE Austrian musical "Empress Sissi" about the beautiful Empress Elisabeth of Austria will be staged at Shanghai City Theater on September 18 and 19.
The 135-minute production, in English with Chinese subtitles, features 46 solo singers, a grand choir, a symphony orchestra from Vienna and an extravagant stage set. Ninety period costumes have been created from designs by Viennese tailors.
The show by the renowned Schneider-Siemssen Theater Company made its successful debut last year at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
The love story of Sissi and Franz Joseph is recreated with all the fun, fizz and sentimentality of champagne.
It follows the emotional journey of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898) from her childhood home in Bavaria to the glorious imperial capitals of Vienna and Budapest.
The romantic show relives the story of the 1950s "Sissi" films starring Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Bohm.
"Although the real Empress Sissi suffered health and other problems and lost many relatives and friends before being assassinated in Geneva in 1898, the musical focuses on the most glorious part of her life," said Tamas Ferkay, the director.
Settings include the romantic wilds of the Salzkammergut Mountains, the Hungarian Puzta, the baroque park of the famous Austrian imperial palace of Schnbrunn and Possenhofen castle in Bavaria, the childhood home of the empress.
"I was infatuated by the 1950s 'Sissi' films and I have bought two tickets for the best seats for me and my daughter," said Guo Kaiyu, a 47-year-old Shanghainese woman.
The score was composed by Georg Stampfer, evoking Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms and Strauss.
Date: September 18-19, 7:30pm
Venue: Shanghai City Theater (4889 Dushi Rd)
Tickets: 100-900 yuan
