A taste of Portugal in Fado concert

RENOWNED Portuguese singer Katia Guerreiro will present a night of Fado with special guest mezzo-soprano Wang Weiqian of the Shanghai Opera.

Fado, meaning “destiny” and “fate” in Portuguese, can be traced to the 1820s. The music is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, and generally sung by one person called a fadista, accompanied by Portuguese guitar and classical guitar.

In 2011, Fado was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

Born in 1976, Guerreiro has taken Fado all over the world. Since 2001 she has recorded eight albums in her own name in addition to several partnerships with internationally renowned artists.

In 2010 Guerreiro received the “Best Performer of Fado” award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation.

Johnny Lais of the BBC said that “as a Fadista, Guerreiro is undoubtedly a leader in her field.”

“Her voice is instantly recognizable with its deep, earthen tones and the simplistic ease she delivers the songs, at points soft and seductive, at others impassioned,” he said. “Her skill as a vocalist is clearly evident. Whether singing in French or Portuguese, Guerreiro maintains the ability to convey the meaning and emotion of the lyrics and the music to a non-native audience.”
