Baroque chamber music fills the air
THE Third Baroque Chamber Music Festival offers five concerts, 60 master classes and 20 professional lectures from today through next Sunday.
The Baroque period of music lasted around 150 years from 1600 to 1750 between the Renaissance and Classical eras. Masters include Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Telemann, Couperin and many other masters. The musical events will take place at the Middle School affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. International artists have been invited, including violinist Antti Tikkanen, tenor Teppo Lampela, cellist Markku Luolajan and harpsichordist Petteri Pitko, all from Finland.
Emphasis is on multidimensional, multicultural and multi-perspective music. Teachers can attend four international training courses aimed at enriching their experience and creativity and broadening their perspective.
Artists from Finland and China, including Taiwan, will give lectures and master classes in chamber music to students and teachers. Topics include period violin, classical guitar, period flute and period cello, the Baroque concerto and literature and arts in the period.
Established 83 years ago, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music is the oldest institute of higher musical education in China. The affiliated middle school was founded in the 1950s to give students consistent musical training over nine years. More than 500 students from China and overseas are enrolled.
