Baroque music the way it sounded to Vivaldi

THE Academy of Ancient Music, which uses period instruments and authentic reproductions, will stage a concert of Baroque music by the masters next Thursday at Shanghai Concert Hall.
The British period-instrument orchestra will stage a program "Nature's Voice and Verse," including Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." Between each season, classic opera selections describing the seasons will be performed.
These will include excerpts from Purcell's "Fairy Queen" and Handel's "Giulio Cesare in Egitto". British soprano Elin Thomas, best known for her interpretation of Baroque music, will participate.
The sound and style is as close to the original as the orchestra researchers and crafts people can make them. The aim is for the audience today to hear what Baroque audiences listened to.
The Academy of Ancient Music was founded in 1973 by Christopher Hogwood, who aimed to find out more about the original intentions of composers such as Bach, Handel, Haydn and others.
Replicas of old flutes are made with wood, trumpets lack valves and strings are made from gut.
The size of the orchestra is tailored to each composition.
