Big dragon boat race on Saturday

THE dragon boat race has been a tradition in China for more than 2,000 years. The Dragon Boat Race in Suzhou is a fun, family-friendly, competition that brings together sports, culture and entertainment.

The first race was held in 2010 to preserve Chinese traditions and help people learn more about Chinese culture. More than 20 teams from around Suzhou competed, including rowers from businesses, academic institutions and other organizations. It was a success. With improved marketing and event planning, the 2011 race attracted 37 teams, around half-and-half Chinese and expat.

This year around 50 teams will compete. There are men's and women's divisions.

Teams are comprised of at least 12 but no more than 20 members. All members of each team belong to the same organization, whether a school, company or other organization. All are supposed to wear identical or similar outfits. Of course, they have to be healthy and be good swimmers.

The event is not open to individuals. Teams paid entry fees of 10,000 yuan (US$1,575). All team members will receive gifts.

The event will be covered live on CCTV-5 and Tudou.com.
