Brewing up a party at beer festival
THE eighth annual Kunshan International Beer Festival started last week and it offers many fine beers from around the world.
The 11-day festival serves up 200 beers from eight countries in the Jiangsu Province city near Shanghai. Also included are live band performances, food and the favorite of many, a beer-drinking competition.
The festival is taking place at Citizen Cultural Square near Kunshan Library.
Taiwan-based popular singer Tiger Wong and music group Power Station were on hand last week to open the festival.
"We have successfully held the festival in the past seven years and this annual carnival has been an important party for our residents," says Dai Xiaohua, the vice director of the Kunshan Municipal Government's News Department. "In recent years, the festival has attracted more people from cities like Shanghai and Suzhou."
The festival usually takes place around the same time as the Munich Beer Festival. Of course, some beers imported from Germany are available and can be purchased for 20 yuan (US$3.14) to 30 yuan per bottle. Domestic beers are sold at regular market prices.
Dai says beer consumption in the city during the festival reaches seven liters per person.
Date: Through August 26,
5pm-12am
Venue: Citizen Cultural Square, 368 Qianjin Rd M.
Entrance fee: 10 yuan
How to get there: Kunshan is only 30 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed train; or by car, take G2 and get out at the Exit of Kunshan/Zhangpu (40 minutes by car from Shanghai).
