Britpop Suede鈥 plays 鈥楤loodsports鈥 in concert
A Britpop wave is about to sweep Shanghai during the golden week holiday as the pioneering UK band Suede will play at Shanghai Grand Stage on October 3.
It is the second time that the British alternative rock band performs in Shanghai, having previously played here in 2011.
“Last time, we didn’t have enough time to look around. Shanghai is a modern and enthusiastic city. Our fans are also lovely and the most enthusiastic. We expect to have a more memorable time than years ago,” says Brett Anderson, the frontman of Suede, through an e-mail interview.
“In 2011, when the show started, many fans ran to the front. They were all standing during the show. It was amazing,” Anderson adds.
The band will also have concerts in Guangzhou in southern China’s Guangdong Province on October 1 and Beijing on October 5. The concerts will feature the theme of “youth.”
‘So Young’
All band members were surprised when they saw on the Internet that “So Young,” a single from the self-titled debut album by Suede released in 1993, is also the title in English of a 2013 Chinese box-office hit directed by Zhao Wei, and also featured the band’s song, helping it regain popularity.
The film is based on the best-selling novel “To Our Youth That Is Fading Away” by Xin Yiwu. The film was actress Zhao’s directorial debut.
Some Chinese fans grew up with Suede, and Anderson believes that “the resonance in the music” is something that keeps them addicted to the band. “Maybe many fans are addicted to our power on the stage as well,” he says.
Suede, formed in 1989, “is largely credited with kicking off Britpop in the spring of 1992 with the single ‘The Drowners’,” Kayley Kravitz wrote on the website britpopnews.com.
The band released a new album, “Bloodsports,” in March and it has made for a successful comeback for the band.
It is for the first time in 10 years that Suede has released new music. The album reunites the Suede lineup that took shape with 1996’s “Coming Up” — Anderson, guitarist Richard Oakes, bassist Mat Osman, keyboardist Neil Codling and drummer Simon Gilbert.
The album will be released in China this month to coincide with the tour, and will have “a special cover design for Chinese fans,” Anderson reveals.
Two characters in Chinese, shi (ʼ), for “start,” and zhong (ÖÕ), for “end,” are on the cover’s design, combining the concept of “It Starts And Ends With You.”
“It should be very attractive for fans,” he says. “We will sing songs from the new album.
“We believe it will bring surprises to all of you,” Anderson says.
