Building a better tomorrow

SHANGHAI will celebrate the inaugural World Cities Day today to promote the international community’s interest in sustainable urban development.

Announced by the United Nation’s General Assembly last year, the designation is also a bid to recall, renew and advance ideas and practices showcased at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

“Leading Urban Transformation” is the theme of this year’s World Cities Day.

With the global population increasing by 79 million annually, more than 9 billion people are expected to be walking the planet by 2043.

About two-thirds of human beings will live in cities by 2050, posing both opportunities and challenges to urban sustainable development, according to UN Habitat.

The move is also seen as an important attempt to promote “Better City, Better Life,” the theme of the 6-month Shanghai World Expo, which has struck a chord among participants.

Shanghai’s 2040 blueprint calls for an environmentally friendly and smart city. The goal is to create a safe and livable international metropolis with social harmony and a low-carbon economy.

Thus improving the public’s sense of security, happiness and satisfaction is vital, as is balancing resources and environmental concerns as the city upgrades its industrial structure while enhancing international competitiveness and influence.

The planning bureau has also been soliciting public opinion on the city’s future to make decisions with the needs of residents in mind.

Meanwhile, experts from China and abroad have been invited to take part in six forums today to discuss sustainable urban development.
