Chinese culture classes
Weekly courses in Chinese arts and culture — from martial arts to opera — are offered to both expats and locals by the Shanghai Institute of Language and Culture.
Classes are offered in guqin (Chinese zither), martial arts, calligraphy, watercolor painting, traditional opera, traditional Chinese medicine and tea culture. Informal discussions about the “I Ching” or “Book of Changes,” and the “Tao Te China” will be held.
Late this year a Kunqu Opera concert will be staged, starring the city’s most celebrated artists.
According to Wendy Ma, an official with the institute, foreign cultures will also be showcased. For example, they will cooperate with the Royal Danish Consulate General in Shanghai to host cultural events next year.
