Cuban cultural events to dazzle the city
SPECTACULAR paintings of the birds of the Americas by noted Cuban artist Antonio Guerrero are on display at the Shanghai Gran Melia Hotel through April 25.
Guerrero was born in Miami in 1985 to Cuban parents who returned to the island after the 1959 revolution.
The exhibition "Birds of the Americas" features 86 watercolors, including 21 Cuban birds; he also paints traditional Chinese flowers.
Cuba was the first country in Latin America to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1960.
"This town has plenty of culture entertainment and people in Shanghai are interested in culture. I believe the performance will be very successful," says Cuba's Ambassador to China Alberto Jesus Blanco Silva who opened the exhibition in Shanghai on March 26.
Cultural exchanges with Cuba cover art, music, libraries, museums, various exhibitions as well as education.
"I am glad to know that Chinese young people are very interested in Cuban music and dance, from rumba to cha cha cha," he says.
Besides the exhibition, the Cuban National Ballet will perform "Swan Lake" in Shanghai on May 4 and 5 at the Daning Theater.
The ballet is recognized internationally for its excellence. It was founded by Cuban prima ballerina Alicia Alonso in 1948. It first performed in China in 1961. The last visit was in 2002.
Around 1,600 Chinese students study in Cuba, mostly studying medicine. Cuba is noted for its medicine and biotechnology.
The envoy says Chinese people living in Cuba have made important contributions to Cuban culture. The history of Chinese immigration to Cuba goes back to 1847.
Last year Cuba had 2.7 million international visitors, but only 500 Chinese people. The government is encouraging Chinese tourism.
The ambassador speaks fluent Mandarin. He came to China to study in early 1987 and worked in the Cuban Embassy in the early 1990s. He was Cuban Consul General in Shanghai from 2002 to 2004.
"I lived in China in its different periods of development and it made a big impression on me," the ambassador says. "China has a long history, culture and traditions, which are precious."
