DOME a holiday home away from home

AS he was raised in a big family, you could say that Rauf Malik was born to be in the hotel business. The general manager of the Shanghai Marriott Hotel Changfeng Park says that he and his brothers and sisters were taught from a young age that keeping the household in order required hotel-style efficiency.

"Every member of my family acted as a 'role' in a hotel. Mum was the general manager. I was in charge of housekeeping, my sister was in charge of cooking," says Malik.

Growing up in a diplomatic family, Malik got an early taste of what a good hotel experience should be like. Since Malik's father was a diplomat, the whole family traveled all around the world.

That carried over into his career as a hotelier; making guests feel at home is the center of his philosophy. As a result, Malik emphasizes the idea of "comfort foods."

The idea is that, through high-quality restaurants and chefs from all over the world, Marriott Changfeng Park will be able to accommodate guests from anywhere in the world by providing them with cuisine that makes them feel comfortable and satisfied.

This Christmas, the hotel's restaurant DOME has put together a set menu to appeal to both sides of their clientele, with US oysters and lobster sitting alongside pan-fried goose liver and a Christmas dessert surprise.

It is offered on December 24, 25, 31.

"It's a way to say 'thank you' to all of our customers - both expats and locals. Christmas is usually one of the happiest times of the year, let's enjoy," the general manager says.

The special menu was designed by executive chef Albert Thoeny. It is highly recommended.

Since the Christmas is coming, the hotel is in a festive decoration, creating a warm feeling toward guests.

In his 13 years of working in Chinese mainland, DOME is one of the particular points of pride for Malik, with its Western menu proving a hit.

"The young people have changed completely. They are more high tech, and have higher expectations. They are expecting a finer kind of traveling, and when they come back, they want to eat authentically," says the general manager.

"We thought this was the time to create something with authenticity."

The restaurant's steak house was a response to this expectation, but it's also about sharing his personal favorites. "When I love something, I want to share it," he says.

But his love of fine things does not stop at a good steak.

Malik has stored around 20,000 cigars and 10,000 bottles of wine all over the world.

"I always say that if there comes a time when I can't afford Cubans anymore, then I will stop smoking."

Alongside his favorite Cubans, Malik has also ensured his favorite Chilean wine Chocolan is on DOME's menu.

"I thought it was the most beautiful wine I have ever tasted," Malik says.

"I'd open a small restaurant and put in it all of the things I have collected from around the world ... It would just be open from midday until 2am and serve all my best wines and favorite dishes," says Malik. "It wouldn't be for making money but for the enjoyment of life."
