Data lacking on local students

Unprotected sex has been blamed for nearly 96 percent of the new HIV/AIDS cases in Shanghai, while the transmission of the deadly virus among homosexuals accounted for over 60 percent, local health officials said.

Last year, as of November 20, Shanghai had registered 1,637 new HIV carriers, including 668 new AIDS patients, taking the number of people infected by the virus to 10,961, including 3,318 AIDS patients. A total of 157 people died of HIV/AIDS last year, raising the number of deaths due to AIDS to 729.

In Shanghai, it is difficult to find detailed statistics on HIV-AIDS among gay or straight college students.

“So far I haven’t seen many homosexual college students diagnosed as HIV-positive. But the real situation is a lot of people don’t give the correct or detailed information,” said Bu Jiaqing, founder of the Shanghai Youth Service Center for AIDS Prevention.

But since 2010, Bu said, “HIV-positive men are getting younger.”
