Debut exhibition for emerging artist

ARTIST Yu Yang, who prefers to be called Nisky, will hold his first public exhibition this month at Galerie Dumonteil Shanghai.
The exhibition is titled "The Circular Maze," which was inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' short story "The Circular Ruins," and features 12 paintings created by Nisky in the past two years.
Galerie Dumonteil has spent the past five years seeking upcoming artists from around China. Nisky is the gallery's first discovery.
After the Shanghai exhibition ends, Galerie Dumonteil will display Nisky's paintings at its galleries in Paris and New York.
As for the nickname Nisky, Yu created it for himself and it represents an alphabetic compound of his favorite film directors Federico Fellini and Krzysztof Kieslowski.
The 24-year-old artist was born in Shanghai. He considers art to be a condition between confusion and ambiguity.
Nisky believes everyone can experience their own joy regardless of identity, region or background.
The exhibition has two parts.
The first group of paintings were made while he was inspired by primitive art. These pieces showcase characters and incidents that may be considered repetitive, yet each has a different identity.
The other paintings emphasize layout and structure.
The piece "Behaviorist" is dedicated to pop art and surrealism masters like Roy Lichtenstein and Rene Magritte. The painting depicts many colorful animals, symbols, patterns, objects and more.
Nisky focuses on the arrangement and thoughts of the paintings' structure. He said he longs for creating a time that's away from the real one. In his works, the past, present, future, memory, fantasy, dreamland and reality can be mixed and disposed in different spaces.
The exhibition will open tomorrow and continue until April 9.
