Dialect contest in song, dance

A light-hearted Shanghai dialect contest featuring stage performances will be held in mid-September. Finals will be held in October.

It will feature Huju Opera, Shanghai dialect songs, Shanghai farce and story telling.

The event, which also includes expats and new learners, is sponsored by the Changning Bureau of Culture and the Shanghai Folk Culture Society.

The aim is to preserve and promote the fast-fading dialect and the competition is seen as a casual and entertaining way to encourage people to learn and speak it.

Foreign contestants will be in a special category. They don’t have to be veteran speakers or performers. New learners are welcome.

Registration deadline is September 9 (details below). Winners will have opportunities to appear in local TV and radio programs.

The competition is part of the ongoing Shanghai Citizens Art Festival.

“Shanghai dialect, which has a unique cultural value, is now declining,” says Professor Zhong Fulan from East China Normal University, director of the Shanghai Folk Culture Society. “It is urgent to protect and promote the dialect of cultural richness and diversity among the younger generation.”

The Changning Folk Culture Center also plans to promote local Huju Opera, which originated in folk songs in the Huangup River region. As a folk opera it was in its heyday in the 1920s and 30s in Shanghai. Subjects are often topical and costumes rather modern.

Four free Huju Opera lectures will be hosted on Monday afternoons at 1:30pm in September. Celebrated Huju Opera artists Ma Lili, Zhang Xingsheng and Li Enlai will discuss their work.
