Digital art mixes tradition, modernity

THE dynamic digital version of the famous ink-wash painting "Riverside Scene in the Qingming Festival" made waves at the Shanghai World Expo last year, a sign that digital art is coming of age.

From Thursday through July 25, more than 20 Chinese digital artists will exhibit 50 works at Shanghai Times Square.

The show titled "About Me" includes works of Bu Hua, Yao Wenshuang, Wang Xuejun and Wei Qianqian.

The artists mix a measure of modern flavor with the traditional. Peking Opera characters and Chinese folk elements find their way into the works.

Many pictures depict a fantasy world built on the artists' imagination and dreams. All are focused on the self.

"Although the digital graphic artists fully subvert the traditional art, they inherit its spirit," according to the exhibition organizers.

"Without the burden of the traditional pen and ink, and untroubled by Western oil painting techniques, pens and brushes are replaced by the mouse, paper and canvas replaced by the screen."

All works in the exhibition are created by computer, handwriting board and mouse, digital tools that provide a new aesthetic dimension.

Compared with traditional drawing and painting methods, the web and the approachable digital painting techniques make this art form more accessible to people of today.

"This art form fits the characteristics of modern times and it will be taken into every corner of life," says Cathy Hau, an organizer of the exhibition.

Some of the participating artists will attend the opening ceremony on Thursday evening and chat with the audience.

According to art critic Wang Boqiao, digital art will become an important part of civilization.
