Disney unveils big plans for its resorts

WITH less than one year before the grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort was not announced, the resort drew worldwide attention at the recent D23 Expo 2015, a biennial Disney fan event held in Anaheim, California.

A pavilion devoted to the resort displayed the attractions visitors will be able to experience.

Bob Weis, executive vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering, took the fans for a sneak preview.

“We want to give something for everyone in the traditional Chinese family that has multi-generation members — children, parents and grandparents, but in Shanghai there is also a vibrant young adult audience,” Weis said.

The pavilion showed that the resort is going to feature quintessential Disney elements such as fairy tales and magic, along traditional Chinese elements including Chinese architecture.

Fans of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars,” “Tron,” “Rapunzel” and “Peter Pan” and many other movies will be excited as they will get to feel as if they are a part of the stories.

The iconic castle will break numerous Disney records. It will be the entertainment giant’s tallest, largest and most interactive castle ever. It will also be the first castle at a Disney resort to have a ride going through it.

Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said:

“China is one of the biggest countries in the world, having the largest population, and Shanghai is the largest city in China, so there is no reason we wouldn’t build the largest castle in the Shanghai Disney Resort.”

The castle will include restaurants and lounges where visitors will be able to take a rest, while there will also be a Snow White themed area on the second floor.

The themed land Tomorrowland attraction will feature a series of science fiction works and futuristic technology. The “Star Wars” Launch Bay will welcome visitors to the land while a ride inspired by the movie “Tron” will give fans the chance to experience a super-fast motorcycle.

Meanwhile, Treasure Cove is the very first pirate-themed land at a Disney resort. The creators are brining brand new technologies for the ride. The details are left for visitors to figure out, but it was confirmed that fans will be able to search for treasure in a sunken ship with Captain Jack Sparrow.

The legend of Captain Sparrow will continue in the resort and on the big screen. The next “Pirates” movie will be in theaters in 2017. It was announced at D23 that fan favorites Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) will return for the fifth movie of the series, titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

Actor Johnny Depp, who plays Jack Sparrow in the films, appeared at D23 to receive the Disney Legends Award for his performances in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series and “Alice in Wonderland.”

Disney has also announced plans for its Pixar, Marvel and Lucas Film units.

Next year, the relationship between humanity and nature will be a big theme in Disney’s movies like “Moana” and “The Jungle Book.” “Zootopia” examines how people overcome their base instincts.

Pixar will bring back several classics next year, among which the “Finding Nemo” sequel and “Toy Story 4” are expected to be popular with moviegoers around the world.

Fan favorite Marvel, of course, will not be forgotten. Next year two movies, “Doctor Strange” and “Captain America 3: Civil War,” are expected to deliver superhero action as popular characters fight for truth and justice.

The trailer of “Captain America 3” was shown at D23, instantly sparking heated “So Me,” or social media, discussions among fans in both China and the United States.

The trailer shows a glimpse of a fight scene between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), as well as a conflict between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr). The unexpected appearance of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) was another big surprise for fans as well.

There’s also big things in the works for “Star Wars” fans. Apart from the upcoming three movies, Disney announced at D23 that it is going to expand its Florida and California resorts, building new lands featuring Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Anakin and Obi Wan. It’s Disney’s biggest theme park expansions since the “Avatar” land opened in Florida’s Animal Kingdom in 2017.

The “Star Wars” lands will have two signature attractions. Guests will get behind the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, as they take on a customized secret mission. Make the jump to light-speed and travel to a never-before-seen planet and a remote trading port as Star Wars characters and their stories come to life.

“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” Iger said.

“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”
