Donated works from collector, patriot

THE exhibition “Highlights of Ancient Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Donation of Sun Yufeng’s Family” is on display at Shanghai Museum.
Sun (1901-1967) was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. After graduating from a local school, he moved to Shanghai to find work and started his own successful business in 1929.
Sun was a keen connoisseur of Chinese painting and calligraphy, and collected hundreds of ancient works in his studio, Hongyizhai. His collection spanned nearly 1,000 years, from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) to the modern age; as well as genres and media like letters, poems, portraits, landscapes and flower-and-bird paintings.
In 1965, in honor of the successful explosion of the first atomic bomb in China, Sun donated 78 paintings and calligraphy works featuring patriotic themes to the Shanghai Museum.
These included “Five Old Men of Suiyang with Colophons” by Jiang Can from the Song, Zhang Yuan’s “Architecture Record of Taixian Pavilion in Running Script” from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and Wen Zhenming’s “Bamboos and Rocks” from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
In 1981, in accordance with Sun’s will, his wife Wang Defeng and their eight children donated 82 artworks to the Shanghai Museum.
“We’d like to pay our respect to Sun Yufeng, his wife and their children,” said Yang Zhigang, the museum’s director. “Through this exhibition we would also like to commend Sun and his family’s efforts to protect our cultural relics and their enthusiasm for patriotism.”
The exhibition showcases 83 works donated by the family.
One highlight of the exhibition is “Bamboo and Rocks,” created by Wen Zhengming from the Ming. It is said that Wen created this painting at the age of 62, at the height of his artistic career. Wen is noted for his vivid depictions of bamboo.
