Eco Design Fair offers 'green' fare
THE Eco Design Fair on Saturday offers a world of creative, sustainable ideas, lots of activities, tempting organic food and a platform for networking about business, health, beauty and the environment.
It's also a place to shop and share ideas.
Around 8,000 visitors are expected at the fair at the Stage at the Cool Docks and the Waterhouse on the South Bund.
Activities are intended for both adults, teens and children.
The fair will feature a show of sustainable fashion made with natural fabrics, high-energy performances by Zumba Shanghai, healthy living and beauty demonstrations, a "critical mass" bicycle ride, bike demonstrations, an eco art exhibit and "green" city walks.
Visitors can watch health and beauty demonstrations, shop for organic produce and other foods at an eco fresh food market and shop for ideas, products and services at the eco ideas market. An eco kids' corner will educate and entertain young people.
Information and exhibitions cover many aspects of wellness, food safety, healthy eating, energy, transport, urban gardening, "green" business opportunities and how to start a sustainable business.
The theme of the 9th Eco Design Fair is "Explore, Create and Grow." It has been held twice a year since 2008.
"The root of all inspiration comes from exploration that in turn enthuses creation and enables us to grow. The fair exists primarily to inspire and grow our eco-consciousness for better living and a greener tomorrow," says Sherry Poon, founder of the event.
The key organizers of this edition include Wobabybasics, Ogilvy Earth, Naked Retreats and Jooi.
GoodtoChina is the co-organizer bringing interactive workshops and exhibits to help visitors to identify, understand and practice sustainable living.
LOHAS - Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability - is becoming increasingly popular in China. The Eco Design Fair is one of the earliest initiatives in Shanghai for networking, exchanging ideas and generally building the environmental consciousness movement.
It showcases environmentally responsible and sustainable design products and designers in Shanghai and elsewhere in China.
Initially, when the design fair started, almost all the visitors were expats, but around half the participants now are locals, mostly young students, Poon says.
"We are glad visitors don't just come, buy and go," Poon says, adding that some enjoy the food, talk with designers and make friends.
"It's not just a trade market, but more like a big party," she says.
