Fill-in conductor highly distinguished

SWISS conductor Charles Dutoit will be filling in as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in its local concert on May 4.

While American maestro Lorin Maazel had been set for the podium and couldn’t make it due to sudden illness, Dutoit is not just any substitute.

Dutoit is one of the most renowned conductors in the world, now serving as artistic director at Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His debut performance with the Boston Symphony was in 1981 and he frequently returns to lead the orchestra.

The program will feature Glinka’s “Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila,” Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” as well as Berlioz’s “Symphony Fantastique.”

In the 2012/13 season, Dutoit led the Boston Symphony Orchestra in interpreting 20th century musical landmarks.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the “Big Five” orchestras in the United States. In 1979, it became the first American orchestra to tour China’s mainland, after normalization of relations.

Pianist Behzod Abduraimov from Uzbekistan will join the concert. Born in 1990, Abduraimov won first prize with Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3” in the 2009 London International Piano Competition at age 18. He recently has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Orchestra and directors like Dutoit, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Valery Gergiev.
