Garden concert banks on famous film scores
FOLLOWING the success of last year's event, Shanghai East Radio Company will host a two-hour concert at Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden this year.
The Prague Symphony Orchestra, a leading Czech music ensemble with a history of around 80 years, will be invited to perform well-known film scores, musical scores and classic orchestral pieces from Strauss, Beethoven and Dvorak.
The program includes songs from "Star Wars," "Harry Potter" and "The Magnificent Seven" along with tunes from well-known musicals such as "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera."
Zhang Minquan, one of the organizers, says they hope bringing famous movie and musical scores to a park-like setting will become a new fad in the city.
"We will invite prestigious orchestras from all over the world," Zhang says, adding the concert will be an annual event. "We hope that enjoying classical music on the greenland will become a new fashion for local people, especially the young generation."
Meanwhile, a music carnival and creative bazaar takes place at shopping mall Shanghai Joy City this weekend.
Energetic campus singers and bands from different universities around the city will perform.
Taiwanese jazz-pop singer and songwriter Yen-j, also known as Yan Jue, will perform tomorrow. The gifted young artist, who plays the piano, trombone, guitar and bass guitar, is a rising star on the Mandopop scene.
While having fun, visitors can also find a lot of handmade artworks at the creative bazaar, including jewelry, T-shirts and environmentally friendly bags.
