Getting the young into Peking Opera
SHANGHAI Peking Opera Company has recently launched the second season of “Youth Runway,” a 5-year training project for the city’s young Peking Opera talent.
From 2011 to 2015, the first season of the project cultivated artists of varied vocal schools, many of whom have been honored in the nation’s major Peking Opera competitions.
The second season of “Youth Runway” is also collaboration with the 2017 Shanghai Citizens Art Festival to make traditional theaters more accessible to ordinary people.
For the first time, Peking Opera fans will have the chance to be the jury along with professionals and theater critics for a contest to select young candidates for the training project.
A total of 56 performers will compete in the contest running from April 1 to 9. They will display classic excerpts such as “Women General of Yang Family” and “Xi Shi.”
Eighteen will be selected and receive systematic training in vocal and acting skills.
Officials from the Shanghai Peking Opera Company say they hope to nurture young Peking Opera talents.
The young performers will have more platforms to practice and innovate. In addition to performances, they will also be invited to a series of cultural events at the Shanghai Citizens Art Festival, including campus and community lectures.
“We will build up a connection between Peking Opera and the lives of local people,” says Shan Yuejin, director of the Shanghai Peking Opera Company. “In the future, we are also planning to launch open days for young citizens to get closer to the art.”
