Hardcore punk from German underground

THE German underground hardcore and punk legend Dean Dirg will stage on Saturday at Yuyintang live house. Three Shanghai-based bands - Death to Giants, Friend or Foe and The Horde - will support the show.

Dean Dirg's sound combines snotty 1970s punk with 1980s furious hardcore, which gives a raw and uncompromising finish. Their catchy punk rock riffs and inner aggression give intensive 60-second songs.

"Their music is really powerful and energetic. It's pretty unique and difficult to describe. It's just 'Dean Dirg's sound'," says Toshihiro Kanamaki, the organizer of the upcoming show. He is a bassist in Shanghai.

Dean Dirg was formed in 1999 in Wuppertal, in the northeast of Germany, by four boys who were scared of the future and angry about pretty much everything outside their rehearsal room.

After DIY recording their demo tape in 2000, without any great expectations, they started playing more and more gigs and were increasingly popular.

Their latest album "Dean Dirg ... Verpisst," first released on German label Hardware Records, is as raw and uncompromising as ever.

"Smart punk-rock riffs to move your feet mix with desperate aggression to scream your lungs out, all spiced up with catchy beats. And there's not much room to catch your breath with an average song length of 60 seconds," says Kanamaki.

Founding members Doph (vocals), Borge (drums) and Torsten (bass) have been the heart of Dean Dirg for 13 years. The band has seen several top guitar players who were shared with bands such as "Surf Nazis Must Die," "The Now Denial" and "Idle Hands."

In the upcoming show, the three supporting bands have a lot to offer.

Death to Giants is comprised of bassist and vocalist Nichols (also of Rainbow Danger Club) and drummer/vocalist Ivan. For almost two years, they have been performing their combination of punk, meth-rock, jazz and metal for crowds in Shanghai and elsewhere.

Friend or Foe is a three-piece band based in Shanghai. Their music bridges the gaps between punk, dance rock and outright audacity.

Since their formation in 2010, they have staged at Yuyintang and Mao Livehouse, and in Beijing's D22, Dos Kolegas, and Old What Bar. They have also performed festivals around the country.

The Horde came storming onto the Shanghai scene three years ago, with the rise of Ho-Tom the Conqueror (guitar, vocals).

Ho-Tom quickly gathered followers, ultimately teaming up with Fierce Franco (mandolin, vocals), Johnny 2.0 (cajon), George the Goliath (harmonica) and Nick Nasty (melodica, accordion) to form a clan of folk- and bluegrass-loving hooligans.
