Hidden House a true gem in mountains of Zhejiang

The Hidden House is literally “hidden” in the green mountains in Tonglu, Zhejiang Province. A two-hour drive from Hangzhou Railway Station, it is almost impossible for first-time visitors to find the place.
The car took us zig-zagging in the mountains for around half an hour, bypassing several hostels en route. We had totally lost direction when we arrived there. It is nestled in a remote and picturesque valley, with several local residents’ houses and some small pieces of farmland scattered around it.
Being “hidden” is one signature of the hotel, and being “homey” is another. The hotel’s two small wooden buildings feature a rustic and natural exterior design, with a nice courtyard between them. The place has only five guestrooms. Each has the same simple and relaxing vibe, and most of the furniture is made from natural wood. Rooms have no TVs, which is by design because there is much more to do here than just staying in the room and watching TV.
The living room on the first floor of the main building is where we spent most of our time at the Hidden House. Its cozy leather sofa and open, cast-iron fireplace make a perfect combination for a winter evening, where visitors can play cards or chat over a glass of wine. A large dining room with an open kitchen is next to the living room. Fresh vegetables grown in the neighborhood are delivered directly to the kitchen everyday, and visitors can cook for themselves with everything in the fridge whenever they want.
The nearby mountain offers a few hiking routes. Be prepared — some of them are not easy. The hotel’s butlers are great guides, though. And after the hike, enjoy a bath in the outdoor hot tub, where you can see the starry sky and the mountains.
“The Hidden House is more than just a hotel,” said its owner, Liu Ye, “It is a way of life. We want people to experience it, learn from it and, most of all, to enjoy it.”
