Joyce fans prepare ‘Bloomsday’ blast

JUNE is the month for James Joyce’s fans to celebrate “Bloomsday,” which marks the famous day in the life of Leopold Bloom depicted by Joyce in “Ulysees.”

This holiday has been enthusiastically celebrated in Shanghai over the years, and this year will see one of the liveliest programs yet.

The Bloomsday program will meander across Shanghai, from Pudong to Puxi, echoing Bloom’s journey across Dublin.

Meanwhile, tomorrow there will be various programs including Joyce readings and dramatizations, music, food and drinks.

Dress up in a costume to truly get in the spirit.

All activities are drawn from Dublin in June 1904 as described in “Ulysees.”

Get involved as “Ulysees” comes to life. Some may even be inspired to quote favorite passages from Bloom’s odyssey.

The finest hostelries in the city are preparing food and drink to round out the Bloomsday experience.

There are prizes for best-dressed Bloomsday costumes and hats, so be sure to arrive in suitable finery.

Everyone is welcome for some or all of the day.
