Lei Feng once a 'sacred' name

WANG Fuhai 86, ex-factory worker

Everybody was following Lei's example as Chairman Mao urged us to. Lei was a great man of righteousness, integrity, selflessness and dedication.

On March 5, we helped the old and the poor. In the 1960s, China lacked almost everything, so we didn't give money because we didn't have any. But we could give our love and our time.

In my generation, Lei Feng was a sacred name.

Yang Guofang 56, school teacher

Lei Feng was my icon. He loved people, the country and the socialism so much. He was a good student of Chairman Mao and listened well.

We didn't only follow Lei's example on March 5. We often visited old people who lived alone, doing housework, buying rice, washing clothes and cooking.

I think those were China's golden days. People were simple and pure. They did good things just because they wanted to help.

Today, it's totally different. Everyone seems to have an agenda or motivation for helping. Lei Feng comes only on March 5 and then he leaves.

Jiang Yingchao 21, university student

It might have been political propaganda at first, but today it means more. I don't think Lei Feng is silly. On the contrary, Lei's selflessness, responsibility, honesty, love for everyone and dedication to work are just what we need in this money-is-the-big-boss world.
