Letting 100 flowers bloom in Jinshan
JINSHAN District is a sea of blooming flowers as the city's southwestern district holds its first Flowers Festival from April 8 to May 8, drawing urban dwellers seeking a getaway.
The whole month will be decorated with 100 types of flowers, flowering trees, plants and vegetables, including fresh strawberries and vegetables ripe for the picking. Every town and virtually every farmers house will be show its best flowers.
Jinshan is one of the biggest agricultural centers in Shanghai.
The festival will include Jinshan spring specialty snacks, a photography contest open to both professionals and amateurs, the debut of eight new orchid species developed by experts from agricultural institutes form Shanghai as well as Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
"It is Jinshan's and the city's first festival that will display dozens of blossoms at one time. It is also an attempt to combine and optimize our district's agricultural and tourism resources together for the first time," says Wang Keqi, deputy director of the Jinshan Tourism Bureau.
The festival covers many towns including Langxia, Luxiang, Fengjing, Tinglin and Shanyang.
"If you travel around Jinshan, you'll see that almost every farmer's house is surrounded by flowers because it's a tradition for our villagers plant flowering plants in their yards," says Zhang Yajun, director of the Jinshan Agricultural Committee.
Golden rapeseed flowers are blazing in the fields in Langxia Town, while pink peach blossoms and white pear blossoms are lining the 4.5km Jinshi Road, occasionally separated by golden cauliflower and blooming milk vetch.
"When you walk into the town, you'll suddenly find a world of golden yellow," Zhang says. The milk vetch and golden cauliflower are planted to form the Chinese character feng, which means "harvest." Visitors can stand on a viewing platform to appreciate the scenery.
Nearby is a large field where people can fly kites and play games.
The peak blossoming period will be from April 5 to 10. Peak times for different flowers are available on the Jinshan official tourism website (www.jsly.gov.cn), its Sina weibos, Jinshan Chuan bo (Jinshan Broadcasting) and Jinshan Luyou (Jinshan Travel), where the flower information is being updated every day.

Around 200 hectares of pear trees and 1,000 hectares of peach trees will be blooming until around April 12. Around 2,670 hectares have been planted in flowering milk vetch and golden cauliflower.
In Tinglin Town, wheat has been planted and cut to form the characters "Welcome to Tinglin," against a background of yellow rapeseed flowers.
In June Metro Line 22 begins trial operation to Tinglin Town.
In Fengjing, an ancient water town, there are large peach groves and rapeseed flowers near the North Jinshan Railway Station. Officials say it's the largest peach harden in the Shanghai suburbs.
Almost 7 hectares of pomegranate trees are blossoming with red flowers.
In Langxia Town, a giant maze has been created next to Xiangyou Road with rape flowers, milk vetch and golden cauliflower. In Nantang Village, visitors can walk through a variety of colorful organic vegetables, such as purple cabbage.
