Local rockers featured on DIY T-shirt line

MUSIC artists usually like to give airs of being cool. Whether it's the jazz player with a cigarette dangling from his mouth or the rocker with a guitar slung over his back, these images are iconic.

But that's a load of baloney. "Art," as the band Cursive pithily describes it, "is hard." Especially at the local level.

The struggle continues, beyond even generating the ideas of any project. Starting a rock band? Difficult. Arranging practice space, writing new material with some consistency, marketing, touring, merchandising, and the rest? Even more so.

Thankfully, like an ember that turns into a wildfire, generating heat makes each step exponentially easier.

That will be on full display today when art collective Twin Horizon launches Shanghai DIY, their line of clothing dedicated to local music acts who live by the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos.

The event will be held from 4pm to 8pm at the Uptown Record Store (115 Pingwu Road, near Xingfu Road). It's free, with the first 60 attendees getting a free Vedett Extra White Beer.

Along with their shirts being on sale, Uptown Record Store will host performances by many of the bands who feature in the clothing line, including Boys Climbing Ropes, Rainbow Danger Club, Stegosaurus (stylized as "Stegosaurus?"), and Friend or Foe. Only Moon Tyrant won't be able to perform.

Each band features in a different shirt designed by Ivan Belcic of Twin Horizon (also the lead singer of Moon Tyrant) on sale for 150 yuan (US$23.75).

To design the shirts, Belcic says he puts each band's music on "and sees what happens." The designs are based not just on each band's music, but also their stage show. For example, the shirt for Friend or Foe features the masks the band sometimes performs in.

Belcic praised each of the bands for being open to working with Twin Horizon in designing the shirts. Each band agreed to have their shirt designed by Twin Horizon and approved the final product.

Belcic says Twin Horizon chose these rock bands featured in Shanghai DIY because they have all released their own albums and have done their own tours across China. Boys Climbing Ropes and Rainbow Danger Club have especially displayed that spirit, including playing in unconventional venues to better connect with local college students who haven't been exposed to local rock music.

In keeping with the spirit of the line, Twin Horizon has kept every aspect of the shirts DIY. The designs were done by the team; each shirt was hand stenciled by the group on shirts from a local supplier; and the release show is at an unconventional venue, done with their own twist. Ivan Belcic promises "no prancing around" at this fashion event.

Prancing is fun, but these guys are working hard. There's art to be made.
