Lumps of granite invite visitors to relax

TEN rounded, curving lumps of white granite invite visitors to recline and children to scramble over them.

This piece of functional art, "A Thousand Plateaus" by Huang Zhiyang, is displayed at Xintiandi Style through the end of the month.

The organic forms are carved by hand and covered with parallel grooves in wave-like patterns.

Huang, born in 1965 in Taiwan, says the installation represents a new trend in contemporary sculpture. He is part of the first generation of Taiwanese artists to establish the contemporary Chinese art scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

Huang is known for ink and oil paintings that take a contemporary approach to traditional Chinese art. Several sculptures form "A Thousand Plateaus" were featured at the World Expo Shanghai 2010.

Huang's works are not representational but are described as "investigating the spiritual, yet scientific relationships among living organisms, from simple bacteria to plants."

He combines traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and abstract form in a signature style.

Another installation from "A Thousand Plateaus" is on display at Jing'an Sculpture Park as part of the Shanghai International Sculpture Biennale.

Date: Through October 31

Venue: Entrance of Xintiandi Style, 245 Madang Rd
