Magicians to cast spells
WORLD-RENOWNED magicians will compete and new talents will cast spells from next Thursday through Sunday (November 5-8) at the Sixth Shanghai International Magic Festival.
The festival takes place every two years and is part of the ongoing 11th Shanghai International Art Festival.
During the magic competition, 14 noted magicians from Germany, France, Italy, Russia and elsewhere will present spectacular stage magic and close-up magic shows.
The performance on November 8 will be followed by an awards ceremony to honor magicians who are tops in their field.
Most of shows will be fresh to the local audience. French conjuror Jerome Murat who studied the puppet and mime will present his new program "Sculpture Mode" and Dorothee Selz's (France) program "Stars and Pigeon" will produce a dream-like atmosphere.
Elements of folk songs and arts will be added. Bastrakov from Russia will present the "Russian Gift," which unfolds like a beautiful Russian tale.
The festival also features an International Magic Props Fair and International Magic Seminar. Masters and experts will discuss trends in magic art and entertainment.
In the past, the festival and competition has provided a platform for young magicians. Popular Taiwanese magician Lu Chen, noted for close-up magic, was the runner-up in 2001.
This year promising entertainers can again work their magic and some may sign contracts with local professional troupes, according to organizer Wu Xiaoming.
Some young talented magicians will have chance to sign contract with local professional performing troupes.
"Age-old magic arts have good prospects in China, particularly among young people," says Wu. "The event is a great opportunity to select excellent artists and promote Chinese magic."
