“Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” is the arena show that combines the music and vision of Michael Jackson with the Cirque du Soleil’s signature acrobatic performance.

The show, which opens tonight, runs through Sunday night at the Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena. The show is a Jackson rock concert on a whole new level, with 3D visuals and audio effects and Jackson’s performances projected on a 5,300-square-feet screen.

The production is one of the two official theatrical productions by Cirque du Soleil about the King of Pop, who died on June 25, 2009. It’s riveting experience fusing visuals, music, dance and fantasy.

Around 35 of Jackson’s masterpieces will be performed, including “Billie Jean,” “Earth Song” and “Beat it.” Fifty dancers, musicians and acrobats will take part.

They embarked on its China tour last week in Beijing, after touring for two years in North America and Europe. The professional creative team that worked closely with Jackson has ensured the authenticity of the MJ style. They include director Jamie King who went on the “Dangerous” world tour in 1992, and Michael Curry who worked as the props and scenic designer for “This Is It.”

The creative team first met at Jackson’s Neverland Valley Ranch in California. “I saw the Giving Tree where Jackson created most of the songs for the ‘Dangerous’ Tour,” says King.

Designer Curry translated Jackson’s signature gloves and shoes into giant stage settings that dancers can move among.

“It is all about music,” says King. “Jackson’s voice drives all the performances. We are not just trying to imitate Jackson, but bringing his music to another level.”

Food and beverages have improved dramatically for both ordinary concertgoers and VIPs. Five-star catering will be available since the Mercedes-Benz Arena has partnered with some high-end hotel groups. Meals can be custom-ordered by VIP clients receiving butler suite service.
