Modern ballet of 'Peony' dream lovers

A modern ballet performance of "The Peony Pavilion," sometimes called China's "Romeo and Juliet," will be performed Friday by the noted Beijing Dance Theater.

The 70-minute ballet "Stirred From A Dream" tells the story of Du Liniang who falls asleep in a garden's Peony Pavilion, where she meets poor scholar Liu Mengmei in a dream. They fall passionately in love.

It is based on the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) theater masterpiece of the same name.

The original required around 20 hours of performance time.

The Beijing Dance Theater has performed at dance festivals around the world and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Royal Danish Theater.
