Monthlong jazz extravaganza around town

JAZZ will fill the air for a month in the annual JZ Festival, with concerts both indoors and outdoors jamming around town.

The festival, which began in 2005, is now the biggest jazz festival in China and in Asia. It will run from September 20 to October 19.

Shows will be staged by more than 80 musicians and 200 bands in theaters, parks, clubs, plazas and streets on both sides of the Huangpu River. As usual, Expo Park and the Shanghai Center Theater will be the two major venues for jazz concerts.

Jazz fans can attend after-parties with different themes every night at JZ Club, Wooden Box Cafe and On Stage, watching jam sessions of masters.

Artists will include Robert Glapser, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, The Brand New Heavies, Lisa Ono and Yoga Lin.

"Over the years, we insist on bringing as many top overseas jazz musicians as possible for each JZ Festival to help more locals get closer to the colorful, live music style," says Voision Xi, JZ music promoter. "We also make sure to provide stages for young jazz talent in China."

As usual, the festival is divided into three theme parties on different stages. Sennheiser Green Note, a two-day outdoor party, will be staged at Expo Park from September 20 to 21. Jazz Around Town will feature free shows from September 22 to October 14. BMW Master Hall will feature jazz masters performing at Shanghai Center Theater from October 15 to 19.

"BMW Master Hall insists on presenting the best of jazz, and for every concert we try to present a single top musician in one particular aspect of jazz," says Xi.

For this year's session, Ibrahim Maalouf, the pioneering trumpeter of contemporary jazz and instrumentation, will play his own brand of contemporary rock, electro and jazz funk flavors.

Helen Sung, Chinese American jazz pianist, will perform many of her original compositions with her jazz quartet. One of the world's great drummers, Jack Dejohnette, will perform with his Jack Dejohnette Group.

Other highlights are Patti Austin, 2008 Grammy winner of Best Jazz Vocal Album, and John Scofield, one of the "big three" jazz guitarists who reunites with his legendary Uberjam Band at the Master Hall.

The outdoor stage of Sennheiser Green Note, on the other hand, will present jazz in multiple styles with plenty of fusion and crossover, including R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop and bossa nova.

Highlights will be Grammy winning pianist Robert Glasper with rapper Mos Def and The Brand New Heavies, one of the world's top acid jazz groups.

Vocalists include bossa nova "queen" Lisa Ono, Taiwanese Cantopop star Yoga Lin and "piano prince" Li Quan.

Jazz Around Town, which used to play the "warm-up" role for the JZ Festival, will now play a major role in the middle of the event, with more performances and stages.

It will feature up-and-coming jazz musicians such as 13-year-old A Bu and winners of the "Voice of China" and "Asian Wave" TV competitions.
