WHAT does it mean to acquire the skills to perform Indian classical music or play the pipa (Chinese lute) or act in Kunqu Opera?
What modes of performances and musical styles tell us about our everyday life?
An unusual concert, “Saath-Saath: Music Across the Waters,” featuring three singers from India, a pipa player from China and three Kunqu Opera performers will be staged over the weekend at two separate venues in Shanghai.
As part of the Saath-Saath Project, the Indian and Chinese artists will also hold discussions with the audience members related to music from the past and the present. The singers will demonstrate the main genres of Hindustani classical music and perform compositions in different ragas or melodic forms.
The pipa player will engage in a musical jugalbandi or dialogue with the singers, invoking strains of Indian music through the Chinese instrument. The Indian singers and Kunqu Opera artists will perform Kunqu music in Indian style and Indian songs in Kunqu style.
The Hindi word saath means “together.”
The Saath-Saath Project aims to achieve a new collaborative outcome with the participation of Indian and Chinese musicians.
