New programs shine spotlight on real people

Several new reality competition shows will debut on TV next month.

Most of the new shows are original and homegrown.

“Amazing Chinese” is an inspiring show about the Chinese dream. It will be aired on CCTV 1 at 8pm beginning on December 8.

The show focuses on the dreams and efforts of ordinary Chinese people from all walks of life. The participants will sing and dance on stage, but also show off special skills related to their professions.

Jin Lei, the show’s producer, considers “Amazing Chinese” an updated version of the popular “China’s Got Talent.”

“The contestants’ heartwarming personal stories about dreams, their simple words and power inside will shine through,” Jin says. “It is both a light-hearted and thought-provoking show.”

Talent return

“China’s Got Talent” is back for a fifth season and will also begin airing on December 8 at 9pm on Dragon TV.

This season’s jury panel includes actress-turned-director Zhao Wei, actor Liu Ye, Taiwanese actor/singer Alec Su and the “godfather of Taiwan variety” Wang Wei-chung. Most of them have collaborated on film and TV series in the past and know each other well.

Their humor, sharp words about contestants and close relationship are expected to be among the highlights of the new season.

In January, China’s first homegrown music commentary program “Song of China” will make its debut on CCTV 3. The show will explore original Chinese songs and introduce singers who have strong market potential. It will also be a platform to gather industry professionals to spur domestic music forward.

Television insiders said the rising number of original domestically produced programs is in response to new regulations from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Last month, SARFT announced that each satellite TV station is allowed to buy the rights to just one overseas program starting next year.

The administration also said it would only approve one musical talent show every three months to be aired during prime time.
